How to Build Your Network at Professional Events

Research the conference you’re about to attend. Identify the speakers and attendees you’d like to meet. Consider contacting an attendee before the event to set up a meeting over coffee or lunch. Attend social hours and poster sessions at the event to make new connections.

These are some of the basic steps shared at “Conference Hints II: Academic Community and How to Make Long-Lasting Connections,” an APS Professional Development webinar held April 3. Psychological scientist Serena Zadoorian (University of California, Riverside) and management expert Derek Brown (Columbia Business School) shared tips on forming new professional connections at conferences such as the APS Annual Convention, and on maintaining those relationships over time.

A recording of the webinar is available below for registrants and APS members.

The workshop is available to APS members and registered workshop attendees.
